The important thing to remember here is that Ricky Gervais is about as funny as leprosy. When he was at that award ceremony and had to ad lib for 5 minutes he couldn't think of anything and just ended up doing an embarrassing version of his David Brent dance. The Office was good because of Stephen Merchant. Actually, it wasn't even that good.

Hahaha as a slightly overweight person I have to agree, it's not the same and I frown upon surgery myself.
However, as it is wrong to take a crass stance FOR fat people and saying it's inherited blablabla yadda yadda, it is as wrong to be completly against them and hating like Gervais does.
I, for one, became overweigh because my family was poor, we moved to my moms job into a forest somewhere in germany. I couldn't keep friends cause I could never visit them and the only thing I had was the internet and unhealthy but cheap food. Of COURSE I know those are all excuses and I could go out now (I'm a student now living in a big town where healthy food could be avaible) for a run, but I am still social inept and also it is very very hard to get over the first few pounds until you feel something finally going better than before (in my case it was the 5 stories up to my math 1 lab ;) )

So yeah, giving excuses is just stupid and everyone could overcome overweigh with a very very good motivation and much willpower, more of both than most people have (those who were ever a drug addict will know how hard it is to get over something that you don't exactly need but which still gives you a kick) also being socially shunned for being fat doesn't HELP getting thin, it is really anti-productive.

In conclusion, haters like... err that dude above which name I forgot, are not only part of the reason why people stay fat, they are also perform the highest act of hyppocracy when they, for example, are smokers, for putting away that little glowing stick is really way easier than enduring a harsh training with 100 extra pounds on your body ;)
On the other hand we/them fat people are at fault too, for if you are really over the first ~10 pounds you could go all the way much easier, still hard, but easier, and maybe they could live a bit longer and be socially more accepted.
